As a woman's belly swells with the growing child during pregnancy, skin is often stretched to the point that striations occur which can be unsightly and actually leave permanent "scars" when the skin fails to return to normal. Common in pregnancy, stretch marks affect 50-90% of pregnant women. But they can also affect non-pregnant women (and also men) such as body builders, athletes, adolescents undergoing rapid growth spurts or anyone who experiences periods of rapid growth or weight gain.
When skin and underlying tissue pull and stretch beyond their ability to give, the collagen deposits located deep in the tissues actually break apart. At these times, the skin rips and tears. The tiny tears heal, resulting in scar tissue. Stretch marks often appear as small, red, pink, purple or dark brown depressed streaks in the skin, ranging in width from one-tenth of an inch to four inches. Stretch marks are most noticeable in the beginning, but after delivery the marks may gradually flatten out and lose their color.
Can anything be done to lessen these scars or marks without using pharmaceutical drugs? The answer is a resounding yes! Essential oils can be very helpful.
Here are some great suggestions:Single Oils: Lavender, Roman chamomile, mandarin (tangerine), geranium, frankincense, elemi, rosewood, rose, German chamomile, neroli, spikenard, myrrh.
Blends-Gentle Baby(a blend put out by Young Living Essential Oils)
Topically apply oils neat or dilute 50-50 and apply on affected areas twice daily.
I recommend using one or more of the above oils in an ointment like Rose Ointment or a salve like-ointment called Tender Tush. Both of these ointments can be found through Young Living.
